# Set up payments

Let customers pay your Kick invoices online.

Connect a Stripe Express account to an entity, and every invoice that uses it includes a link your customer can pay from. When they pay, Kick matches the payment to the invoice and marks it Paid for you.

Setup takes less than five minutes.

### Before you start

* **One payment account per entity**. Each entity can have one Stripe Express account, and invoices can only use the account for the entity they're sent from. If several of your entities send invoices, set up a payment account for each one that should accept online payments.
* **US businesses, paid in USD**. Stripe Express is available for US businesses, and customers pay in US dollars.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Setup takes you to Stripe, and when you are done with setup you automatically return to the Invoicing tab. If you started from a saved draft invoice, Kick reopens it. A new invoice or template that hasn't been saved is closed, and any unsaved changes are lost. Save a draft first, or connect Stripe before you start.
{% endhint %}

### Connect Stripe

You can connect Stripe while creating an invoice or a template.

1. In the invoice or template drawer, go to **Details**.
2. In the Payment group, open the Payment account dropdown.
3. Click Connect Stripe. Kick opens Stripe Express.

#### Sign in to Stripe Express

On the Sign in to Express screen, enter the same email you use with Kick and continue.

#### Tell Stripe about your business

Stripe asks for your business type and then the details it needs to verify you, such as your legal name, date of birth, address, and tax ID (EIN or SSN).

It also asks for your industry and website. If you don't have a website, describe what you sell instead.

#### Connect a bank account for payouts

Search for your bank and sign in to connect the checking account where Stripe sends your payouts.

#### Review and submit

Review your details and click Submit. Stripe closes, and you land back on the Invoicing tab in Kick.

The new payment account appears in Kick on the [Accounts](https://use.kick.co/accounts) tab as a Stripe account named after the entity.

#### Finish setup later

If you leave Stripe before you finish, you can pick up where you left off. In the Payment account dropdown, simply select the account marked **Finish setup**.

Until setup is complete, customers who open a payment link see a message that you're still setting up online payments.

### Add a payment link to an invoice

1. Click **Create invoice** or **Create template**.
2. Under **Details**, open the Payment account dropdown and select your Stripe account.
3. Finish the invoice.

In the email step, the email preview now shows a Pay invoice button. Your customer uses it to pay the invoice.

To turn off online payments for an invoice, set Payment account to None.

Set a payment account on a template, and every invoice created from that template includes the payment link.

→ [Invoice templates](/accountants/bookkeeping-workflows/invoicing/invoice-templates.md)

### Customize the payment page

Brand the Stripe payment page your customers see.

1. Go to the **Accounts** tab.
2. Hover over the Stripe account, click the three dots, and click Settings.
3. Scroll down to Branding.
4. Set any of these:
   * **Logo**. Click Upload logo.
   * **Brand color**. Pick a color or enter a hex code.
   * **Accent color**. Pick a color or enter a hex code.
5. Click Save branding.

### Stripe Express dashboard

To open your Stripe Express dashboard, click **Stripe Express dashboard** below the Branding settings. The dashboard shows:

* all payments,
* reports, and
* when your next payout is expected.

### What your customer sees

The invoice email has a Pay invoice button and a link the customer can copy.

The link opens a page with the entity name, invoice number, and amount due, then goes to Stripe's checkout. The amount due is the invoice total minus any payments already matched to it.

If the invoice can't be paid online, the customer sees a message instead:

| Situation | What the customer sees |
| --------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Invoice is Paid | This invoice has already been paid. |
| Payment is still processing | Your payment is being processed. |
| Invoice is Void | This invoice is no longer valid. |
| Invoice is Uncollectible | This invoice is no longer collectible. |
| Payment account set to None | Online payment is not available for this invoice. |
| Stripe setup isn't finished | The recipient is still setting up online payments. |

### When the customer pays

The payment syncs to the entity's Stripe account in Kick and matches to the invoice automatically. The invoice moves to Paid.

### Payment processing fees

Kick does not add payment processing fees on top of Stripe. Stripe charges the processing fees for online payments:

* **Credit card payments**. 2.9% + $0.30 per successful payment.
* **ACH payments**. 0.8% of the payment amount, capped at $5.

For current Stripe pricing, see [Stripe pricing](https://stripe.com/pricing).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.kick.co/accountants/bookkeeping-workflows/invoicing/set-up-payments.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
