# Create a Kick invoice

Create, design, and send invoices natively from Kick.

### Open the invoice drawer

1. Go to [Invoicing](https://use.kick.co/invoicing).
2. Click **Create invoice** in the top right.

The drawer opens with the inputs on the left and a live preview of the invoice PDF on the right. The preview updates as you type.

### Start from a template (recommended)

To start from a saved template, select it in the Template dropdown at the top of the drawer. The template fills in the invoice details, items, notes, design, and email. You can override any fields that are populated from a Template before sending.

To start from scratch, skip this step and go to Details.

→ [Invoice templates](/accountants/bookkeeping-workflows/invoicing/invoice-templates.md)

### Details

The Details section has three parts: From, To, and Payment.

#### From

Select the entity sending the invoice. The dropdown lists every entity in the workspace and shows the email address the invoice is sent from.

Kick invoices are sent from <invoices@kick.co> by default. To send from your own address, set up a sending domain (profile icon in the top right → Sending domains).

To add the sender's full name, address, and phone number, turn on the toggle in the From section. If the entity already has an address and phone number saved, they fill in automatically.

#### To

Select the customer. Anything saved on the customer's profile fills in automatically.

To add missing details, or to change them for this invoice only, turn on the toggle above the customer dropdown. You can then edit the contact name, company, email, address, and phone number.

#### Choose which fields appear on the PDF

You can hide fields on the PDF and rename their labels.

1. Click the three dots next to the arrow at the top of the Details section.
2. Click Settings.
3. Under From, To, and Payment, clear the Include on invoice PDF checkbox for any field you want to hide.
4. To rename a field, type in its Label box. You can also add a label to a field that doesn't have one by default.

#### Payment

* **Terms**. Choose payment terms, and Kick calculates the due date. You can also create a custom term.
* **Payment account**. To let the customer pay via payment link, choose the account that will receive the payment.

 → Set up online payments
* **Invoice date**. Today by default. Click the date to change it.
* **Due date**. Filled in from the terms. Click it to choose a different date. The due date can't be earlier than the invoice date.
* **Invoice number**. Filled in automatically. The prefix is three letters taken from the entity's name, followed by a four-digit number. For example, Acme Widget Works starts at AWW-0001. After the first invoice, Kick continues from the entity's last invoice number. You can edit the number.
* **PO number**. Optional.

### Items

Open the Items section to add line items.

1. Click in the Item column. You can:
 * select a saved item,
 * add a new item, or
 * type a one-off item and description without saving it as an item.
2. Enter the Quantity and Rate. Kick calculates the amount.

A saved item fills in its own description, rate, and accounts. You can change them on the line.

→ [Items](/accountants/bookkeeping-workflows/invoicing/items.md)

#### Accounting on each line

You can change the **Class** (available for clients on Plus or Advanced) and **Income account** (the credit side of the invoice journal entry) on any line.

If the entity has the Accrual ledger (available for clients on Plus or Advanced) on, you can also set a **Receivables account** (the debit side of the invoice journal entry). Lines post to Accounts Receivable by default. You can create additional receivables accounts if you track receivables separately, for example by customer or project.

#### Tax, discount, and deposit

Below the line items, enter Tax, Discount, or Deposit if needed. Each can be a dollar amount or a percentage.

These apply to the whole invoice by default. To enter them on each line instead:

1. Click the three dots next to the arrow at the top of the Items section.
2. Click Settings.
3. Under Items, check Per line item for Tax, Discount, or Deposit.
4. To show that amount as its own column on the invoice PDF, also check Display column per line item.

### Notes

Open Notes to add a Memo and Payment instructions.

### Design

Open Design to style the invoice PDF. You can:

* upload a logo,
* change the background color,
* change the font and font color,
* set the page size (US Letter or A4),
* add a footer, and
* turn pagination on or off.

### Save or create the invoice

When the invoice is complete, choose what to do next from the buttons at the bottom of the drawer.

{% hint style="info" %}

{% endhint %}

### Review and send the email

In the email step, the inputs are on the left and a preview of the email is on the right.

* **From**. The sender you chose in Details.
* **Reply to**, **To**, **CC**, and **BCC**. Each field accepts more than one email address.
* **Subject** and **Body**. The email message.
* **Attach PDF**. Turn on to attach the invoice PDF to the email.

If you chose a payment account, the email includes a payment link.

To send now, click **Send**. To send later, turn on **Schedule**, choose a Send at time, and click Schedule send.

The menu on the arrow next to Send also has:

* Send test email. Sends a preview to an address you choose.
* Save as template.

Click Back to return to the invoice details.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.kick.co/accountants/bookkeeping-workflows/invoicing/create-a-kick-invoice.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
